How to Find an NHS Dentist in York and North Yorkshire

A practical guide for York, Selby, Malton, Harrogate, Pocklington and the towns around them

Finding an NHS dentist in York can mean ringing practice after practice and hearing the same answer: not taking new NHS patients. If that sounds familiar, you're not alone.

NHS dentistry in York and North Yorkshire is planned by the Humber and North Yorkshire Integrated Care Board (ICB), not the North East one, so some of the advice you'll find online for Newcastle or Teesside doesn't apply here. This guide covers what does.

Check the live lists first

NHS status comes from NHS.uk and changes often, so always confirm with the practice.

1

Check which York practices are taking NHS patients

Start with our York NHS list or the official NHS find a dentist service. Both show which practices are recorded as accepting new NHS adults or children.

Don't just search York city. Practices in nearby places like Haxby, Strensall, Dunnington, Copmanthorpe and Stamford Bridge, or market towns like Selby, Easingwold, Malton and Pocklington, can have availability when the city centre doesn't.

2

Ring practices and ask the right question

You don't register with an NHS dentist the way you do with a GP, so you can contact any NHS practice. Ask: "Are you taking on new NHS adult patients, and if not, do you keep a waiting list?" Some York practices keep lists and call people back when space opens.

3

Get an alert instead of checking every day

Sign up for a free NHS Dentist Alert with your postcode. We'll email you when a practice near you shows as taking on NHS patients, so you don't have to keep checking.

4

If you need treatment urgently

Contact your usual practice first if you have one. If you don't have a dentist, or it's evening, weekend or a bank holiday, call NHS 111 or go to 111.nhs.uk. They can direct you to urgent NHS dental care in the area.

Go to A&E or call 999 for swelling that affects your breathing, swallowing or vision, bleeding that won't stop, or a serious injury to your face or mouth. See our emergency dentist guide for more.

5

Compare private options while you wait

If you can't wait for NHS care, compare private prices before you book. A new patient exam at York practices that publish prices usually costs around £60 to £130. See all dentists in York, the cheapest dentists in York, or our York dental prices comparison.
